BACKGROUND
The lengthening of retirement is one of the biggest social changes of the 20th century. Greater longevity and earlier retirement mean that individuals can look forward to a quarter or even a third of their lives after their main careers. Hand in hand with this seismic change go the impacts of greatly increased expectations for this period of life, rapid demographic change as average age of the population increases, the aftermath of the global financial crisis and an ever- increasing rate of change especially in technology and work.
Given my own experience and what I see happening to friends, adjusting to retirement can be a challenge. While there is plenty of financial advice on retirement there is little available to prepare and facilitate people make the transition to a rewarding lifestyle in retirement.
The change involves new thinking: finding ways to meet needs once met by work, realigning relationships when you are together 24/7 and planning to enjoy the kind of lifestyle you want.
These days retirement isn’t an end but the beginning of a whole new phase of life full of possibilities. It’s time to retire that outdated style of retirement and embrace the change and write and exciting script for the next chapter of your life.
